Make-A-Wish Michigan is dedicated to granting life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. Our mission is fueled by brand awareness, passionate volunteers who are at the core of what we do, dedicated medical teams who refer patients, the generosity of our donors and the dedication of our staff team. We're seeking a dynamic individual to join us in furthering the Make-A-Wish mission through recruiting, training and stewarding our volunteers statewide.

Position summary:

Our volunteer program is an integral part of fulfilling our mission as well as the goals within the development, outreach and wish-granting functions. The Community & Volunteer Engagement Manager, who reports to the Chief Diversity & Engagement Officer, will be responsible for the successful implementation and oversight of the overall volunteer program including supporting recruitment and onboarding, training and placement, engagement and retention. The Manager will focus on providing a premier volunteer experience to our volunteers across the 83 counties in Michigan.

The ideal candidate would have extensive knowledge and experience managing a successful volunteer program, preferably experience working in the nonprofit field. Preferred skills include detailed oriented, exceptional organizational skills, ability to work in a fast-paced environment and great communicator.

Primary duties and responsibilities:

  • Ensure a strong and dynamic volunteer base throughout our territory enabling the chapter to effectively support mission delivery, fundraising and community outreach objectives.
  • Develop and execute overall stewardship and recognition strategy for volunteers, including strategic stewardship and engagement for new volunteers
  • Develop and oversee volunteer recruitment strategy, with a focus on ensuring that volunteer base reflects the diversity of our community and children we serve
  • Attend community events and present on behalf of Make-A-Wish Michigan to share the Make-A-Wish mission and recruit volunteers
  • Support volunteer onboarding and trainings
  • Develop and oversee volunteer communications
  • Manage an in-office volunteer program and cross functionally collaborate with all departments by driving a strategy to expand volunteer usage.
  • Host quarterly volunteer dinners with key volunteers in different parts of the state
  • Oversee compliance with record retention of all mandated volunteer requirements ensuring the chapter is prepared for all chapter audits.
  • Manage Volunteer Speaker’s Bureau
  • Manage Community and Volunteer Engagement Specialist

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of five years of experience building and managing a multi-faceted volunteer program in a professional capacity.
  • Management experience with increasing levels of responsibility and direct stewardship of volunteers.
  • Commitment to and a passion for the mission of Make-A-Wish Michigan and reaching every eligible child.
  • Commitment to reaching eligible children in underserved communities and a passion for being a part of our organization’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging initiatives.
  • Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office and database management, preference for familiarity with Salesforce.
  • Exceptional written, oral, and interpersonal skills, including public speaking experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • 5-7 years of relevant professional experience.

  • Highly professional demeanor, able to work successfully with a wide variety of constituents including medical volunteers, donors, vendors, medical teams and wish families.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, ability to manage multiple priorities, and work in a deadline driven environment.
  • Energetic, flexible, collaborative, and proactive; a leader who is passionate about the mission and can engage new volunteers and drive volunteer recruitment
  • Comfortable speaking in front of groups of varying sizes to convey the Make-A-Wish mission and engage new volunteers from diverse backgrounds.
  • Be innovative and think outside of the box for new opportunities to grow partnerships.
