Position Summary:
SEIU Virginia 512 is seeking a strategic and creative Communications Organizer to strengthen how we engage with union members, unorganized workers, and the broader public. The Communications Organizer will lead the development and execution of dynamic communications campaigns across multiple platformsemail, text, social media, print, and traditional media.

This role will empower frontline workers to share their stories, amplify their voices, and shape the public narrative around worker justice, public services including home care, and collective bargaining. The ideal candidate will be passionate about worker rights, skilled in content creation and digital strategy, and thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

The Communications Organizer will work closely with union leadership, as well as Field, Political, and Policy teams, to support organizing campaigns, legislative advocacy, and membership growth. They must be highly organized, adaptable, and able to manage competing priorities across multiple local union chapters.

Key Responsibilities
Strategic Communications Planning
  • Collaborate with union leadership, staff, and members to develop effective messaging frameworks and comprehensive communication plans for organizing, political, and contract campaigns.
  • Design and implement digital strategies that align with campaign goals and build a consistent narrative across the union.
  • Coordinate content development across departments, ensuring alignment with union values and priorities.
  • Produce high-quality organizing and promotional materials in both digital and print formats.
Messaging & Content Development
  • Craft clear, persuasive, and engaging written content for emails, websites, flyers, newsletters, and campaign materials.
  • Collaborate with staff and members to design visually compelling graphics, social media posts, flyers, and text messages for both online and offline distribution.
  • Develop and execute cross-platform digital campaigns to increase awareness, engagement, and action (e.g., Facebook, Twitter/X, Instagram).
  • Monitor digital conversations and engage with online communities to build visibility and support.
  • Track and grow social media engagement and online audience reach to strengthen campaign momentum.
  • Manage and prioritize incoming communications requests from union staff and chapters.
  • Document actions and events, and train member leaders in digital organizing and storytelling best practices.
Media Relations & Storytelling
  • Lead earned media strategies to amplify campaigns and worker voices.
  • Build and maintain relationships with journalists and media outlets to ensure consistent coverage of union priorities.
  • Respond to press inquiries, coordinate interviews, and prepare member spokespeople with talking points and media training.
  • Identify compelling member stories and elevate them through media, digital platforms, and internal union communications.

Candidates should possess previous communications experience; a strong commitment to working people and justice; strong personal, verbal and written communication skills. Candidates should also thrive in a fast-paced and constantly changing environment.

Successful candidates will bring the following skills and attributes to the position:

  • Previous communications experience with a labor union or other advocacy group, and the belief in and commitment to economic and racial justice
  • Exceptional communication skills (verbal and writing)
  • Understand social media analytics and be able to leverage online tools to prioritize engagement over vanity metrics
  • Understand brand-cohesion and good storytelling
  • Must have basic graphic design skills for screen and print
  • Experience with creating textable graphics, memes, and flyers
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced organization with tight deadlines
  • Must have excellent follow-up skills
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret analytics
  • Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy
  • Familiarity with a range of online campaigning tools, tactics, and strategies
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a remote team and can demonstrate a strong ability to work cross-functionally
  • Proficiency with Google products such as Gmail and Google Drive (docs & sheets)
  • Video pre/post-production experience
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud and/or similar programs
  • Kindness, empathy and concern for others.
Requirements
  • Valid U.S. drivers license with a good driving record
  • Ability and willingness to work long, irregular hours, including evenings and weekends
  • Ability and willingness to travel within Virginia
  • Relocation to the Virginia area (within 50 miles of a Virginia 512 office) is required if offered a position
Salary and Benefits

Starting salary range $68,000 to $80,000 annually, based on experience, with annual cost-of-living-adjustments and merit raises; a generous benefit package, including fully-paid health insurance, paid leave, auto allowance, cell phone allowance, and more, as detailed in the locals Collective Bargaining agreement. Position is an overtime exempt salaried position.

Term of Employment

This is a full-time bargaining unit position.
