In the shadow of most people’s lives are their family and a trickle of close friends. But if you play sport at the highest international level, those same people you know and love from childhood might be of little comfort as the approaching thunderstorms of a major sporting career prevail.
It is possible to live in the same house as your family even, and they not know the hidden torture you endure. The many new and often contrary skillsets and emotions you might need to navigate this new adult life. And how different they might be to your own family’s unique culture, values and skillsets.
I’ve had mothers tell me life’s problems can all be solved with a bowl of spaghetti. But in my 17 years of experience, I’ve seen many otherwise wonderful young men go nowhere after a celebrated sporting life. They remain with few transferable skills and no deep understanding of their real value beyond the echo chamber they lived in of constant praise and attention, which dies the same day they return their club jumper number. And the regular accredited media who have met every plane they arrived on for many years, move on to another, invariably younger player.
All men, especially those living off the earnings of sport, sometimes need to be reminded how community expectations around those who play sport have risen. Together with how sensitive publicly-listed companies are now to investing in any male sports celebrity without a complete, ironclad assurance of how he might behave in any 24 hour news cycle. A happy dog, as we so often say, doesn’t destroy the furniture when left alone for short periods of time.
For the past 17 years, we have built and mended the lives of many of the world’s elite sportsmen and developed a deeply personal understanding and compassion of the narrative of that collective story. They often arrive frustrated, exhausted and confused. Trying to resolve a complicated parable called life, by way of working-class ideology and plain speak. Taught them by well-meaning parents. They know they are lucky, but they often pay a very high price for that life.
We are the coalface of passionate discourse between the life you are given and where it might take you. Both the positive and negative.
And we are fanatical in our distinctive edits of each client’s projects and life, so that the old wood doesn’t get in the way of the new growth.
Our business is small, working with the same clients over several years with nuanced outcomes and, as a general rule, by invitation only.
Otherwise we are good neighbours in a very nice street in a city called Melbourne, Australia. Where people say good morning and mean it.
And international clients take solace in the fact that there are still streets in this world where people stop for a chat while getting the coffee order and have the good manners not to ask what you do.
